Business Development

During periods with fewer active client projects, it is important to use this down time to develop ourselves and our business. This page provides some ideas about how best to use this downtime.

Internal Business Development

  1. Software development: research software or tools relevant to HP modelling or energy efficiency or project management. E.g. EnergyPlus, EES.
  2. Process improvements. Identify an area where you think we could be more efficient, develop ideas and draft to improve our processes/workflow.
  3. TRNSYS Tool: think about any small improvement that could make using this tool easier or more efficient, such as automating repetitive tasks not yet automated.
  4. Workflows: think about how we can improve general workflows, such as modelling a residential or commercial HP, in terms of the different steps (initial client discussions, documentation compilation & review, modelling, audit preparation, review, submission, invoicing, project tracking).
  5. KMS: are there useful learnings from projects that could be documented for future reference on the KMS? Write them up.
    1. Review existing KMS content and suggest any updates or expansions to align with latest protocols and improve ease of understanding.
  6. AI: brainstorm ways in which we can better leverage AI tools in our work.
  7. EnergyAE Website. Our outward image to new & existing clients, how can we maintain & improve the website.
    1. Suggest design or structural improvements or other feedback to improve website.
  8. Article Writing. Especially if there is a topic that is confusing to clients that we get asked on frequently, such as: VEU warranty claims, VEU/CER approval process, legionella compliance, detailed description of AS/NZS 5125 or EN 14511 testing, AS/NZS 4234 simulation.
  9. Admin clean up tasks:
    1. Update project management software: add notes, complete checklists etc for all of your projects.
    2. Update Energy Modelling Overview with project status
    3. Tidy up SharePoint folders especially Client Material, archiving any superseded documents, renaming files for clarity, etc.

Professional Development

  1. Personal learning & study. Identify areas where you would like to upskill and spend time engaging in personal learning. EnergyAE will reimburse any applicable costs.
  2. EnergyAE Resources/Literature: Many academic articles and textbooks relating to thermodynamics, heat pump testing, modelling and optimisation.
  3. TRNSYS: improve your skill with TRNSYS modelling by reading the TRNSYS manual, or developing a new model.
  4. Programming: take an online course on VBA, Python, Javascript or other relevant languages.
  5. Book: read a book related to thermodynamics, heat pump technology or other relevant topic.

Water heating industry involvement

  1. Read latest news relating to the Australian or NZ water heating industry.
  2. Follow updates from the Regulators (ESC, CER, IPART) in Australia and EECA in NZ
  3. Follow other industry groups such as A2EP (Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity), CEP (Carbon Energy Professionals), CEC (Clean Energy Council), etc.
  4. Follow news on the HPWH industry in other major markets - US, UK, Europe.
  5. Research any new innovations in HP technology or similar.
  6. Competitor analysis.
    1. Search for any other consultancies websites offering similar services to us in NZ, Australia or beyond. Identify any learnings from competitors that we could incorporate, whether offering extra services, website content, etc.

These are only a few ideas about how you can use off-project time for professional development and to benefit EnergyAE.
