Integral HPWHs, also known as “all-in-one” or “monoblock” systems, are a type of Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) where the condenser is ‘integral’ to the tank. This design offers a compact and efficient solution for heating water while simplifying installation.
Types of Condenser Heat Exchangers: Integral HPWHs utilize different types of condenser heat exchangers, with common options including copper coil and aluminum microchannel. These materials are chosen for their effective heat transfer properties, contributing to the overall efficiency of the system.

Integral PWH
More commonly microchannel heat exchangers are used as the condenser, shown below. This thin aluminium jacket effectively transfers heat to the tank.

Comparison with Separate HPWHs: In contrast to separate HPWHs, where the refrigerant transfers thermal energy to the water through a plate heat exchanger ‘separate’ to the tank, integral HPWHs offer a more integrated approach. This may result in improved overall efficiency and simpler installation, making them a practical choice for certain applications.
Refrigerant-Cycling Split Integral HPWHs: Notably, integral HPWHs don’t always require the entire heat pump unit (compressor, evaporator) to be ‘integral’ to the tank. Refrigerant-cycling split integral HPWHs feature a separated HP unit, with refrigerant circulating between the unit and the tank via a wrap-around condenser.
Applications and Considerations: Integral HPWHs find applications in various settings due to their compact design and efficient operation. Considerations for installation and maintenance may vary, so it’s essential to assess specific requirements for each use case.
