TRNSYS Template Selection

Explanation of TRNSYS Templates used for AS/NZS 4234 modelling.

Many templates have been developed for different HP technologies and operating modes.

HP Types

Integral HP: Condenser (refrigerant-to-water heat transfer) is built into the tank — wrap-around coil, microchannel, or internal coil.

Separate HP: Condenser is in a separate unit with pumped water circulation to the tank via a heat exchanger.

Template Selection

Choose a template based on condenser type, legionella control strategy, and use of electric elements.

Template nameDescription
Integral_HP

Standard template.

Wrap-around condenser: HXmode = 4.

Internal coil HX: HXmode = 5.

Integral_HP_Daily55Weekly60Allows once per week 60degC boost with HP to allow rest of the week with a lower setpoint i.e. 50-55degC.
Integral_HP_ElecTopIntegral HP with option to trigger element using top sensor. Used for commercial applications.
Integral_HP_WeeklyElecBoostIntegral HP with element used for weekly legionella boost.
Integral_HP_PreheatFinishingOne integral HP as a preheat system with another in series used for finishing.
Integral_HP_VSETIntegral HP with monthly variable set point.
Integral_HP_OSBIntegral HP with one shot boost.
SEPARATE HEAT PUMPS
Separate HPStandard separate HP template describing HP unit with pumped water circulation to tank, with fixed water flow rate.
Separate_HP_VariableFlowStandard separate HP template describing HP unit with pumped water circulation to tank, with variable water flow rate.
Separate_HP_Daily55WeeklyElec60Separate HP with element used for weekly legionella boosting.
Separate_HP_Daily55WeeklyElec60_VariableFlowSeparate HP with element used for weekly legionella boosting, with variable water flowrate to achieve prescribed HP outlet temp.
Separate_HP_Daily55WeeklyHP60Separate HP with HP used for weekly legionella boosting, daily boosting can be less than 60degC.
Separate_HP_Daily55WeeklyHP60_VariableFlowSeparate HP with HP used for weekly legionella boosting, daily boosting can be less than 60degC, with variable water flow rate to achieve prescribed HP outlet temp.
