Glossary of terms used in our work.

Definitions:

  • Air-Source Heat Pump (ASHP): A type of heat pump that extracts heat from the air to provide heating or hot water.
  • Clean Energy Regulator (CER): The administrator of the Renewable Energy Target (RET), including the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
  • Coefficient of Performance (COP): The ratio of input power to thermal output, indicating the efficiency of a heat pump.
  • Delta-T Heat Exchanger (DTHX): Represents the driving temperature difference between the heat exchanger and the tank, determining the degree of stratification.
  • Energy Savings Certificate (ESC): The tradable certificate currency of the Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) in New South Wales.
  • Energy Savings %: The percentage of energy savings of the Air-Source Heat Pump Water Heater (ASHP) or Solar Water Heater (SWH) during TRNSYS simulation compared with the reference water heater, typically an electric storage water heater.
  • Energy Savings Scheme (ESS): A scheme in New South Wales encouraging energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
  • Essential Services Commission (ESC): The Victorian administrator of the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) scheme.
  • Frosting Penalty (FP): A penalty for low-temperature operation caused by frosting, reducing the Coefficient of Performance (COP). Calculated based on a comparison of the COP in the low-temperature test at approximately 2°C.
  • Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART): The New South Wales administrator of the ESS.
  • Minimum Delivery Temperature (MDT): The minimum temperature of water delivered to the load during TRNSYS simulation. Must be at least 45°C.
  • Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES): Provides Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) to small-scale renewable energy installations, including Heat Pump Water Heaters (HPWHs) and Solar Water Heaters (SWHs).
  • Small Scale Technology Certificate (STC): A tradable certificate representing a unit of renewable energy generation, used in SRES.
  • Technical Details Sheet (TDS): Spreadsheet containing all parameters relating to TRNSYS modeling of a system.
  • Stratification: The degree to which a tank is thermally layered, with different temperature zones.
  • Technical Details Sheet (TDS): Spreadsheet containing all parameters relating to TRNSYS modeling of a system.
  • Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificate (VEEC): A tradable certificate used in the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) incentive scheme.
  • Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU): An incentive scheme promoting energy efficiency measures in Victoria.
  • Zones (Climate Zones): Zones 1-5 refer to different regions of Australia from a climate perspective.
